Last Minute Halloween Costumes You Can Make From Your Closet
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. That sounds lovely until you do the math: a Friday party, a Saturday party, and a costume contest at work that you swore you would plan for back in September. If you are reading this with a group chat buzzing and zero costume plan, welcome. You are among friends.
Here is the good news. You do not need a sewing machine, a craft store run, or a $60 costume in a plastic bag that smells faintly of tires. You need your closet, about twenty minutes, and the confidence of a woman who has decided this counts. Below are last minute Halloween costumes for women built from pieces you probably already own, sorted by the item you start with. Find your staple, pick a character, and get back to the important decisions, like snacks.
Start With What You Already Own

Every costume in this guide begins with one closet staple: flare jeans, a black dress, a flannel, a tee, or a pair of boots. The extras are things hiding in your bathroom drawer or junk drawer, such as eyeliner, red lipstick, a headband, safety pins and tape. If you are missing the main piece, we will tell you which Willow Boutique item fills the gap so it can go straight back into your regular rotation on November 1.
If You Own Flare Jeans
Flare jeans are the most underrated costume item you own. One pair gets you three different characters before you even open a makeup bag.
70s Disco Diva
What you need: high waisted flare jeans, a fitted top with a little shine, platform shoes or heeled boots, and the biggest hair you can manage.
Tuck the top in so the waistline sits high, part your hair down the middle (or tease it toward the ceiling), and add gold hoops and shimmer on your eyelids. Then stand in a doorway as if you personally invented the dance floor. That pose does half the work.
Missing piece: the Fiona High Waisted Bell Bottom Flare Jeans. The rise is high and the flare is wide enough to read 1975 from across the room. Customers rate them 4.7 to 4.8 stars, and you will wear them long after the disco ball goes back in storage.
Pumpkin, the Grown Up Version
What you need: orange bell bottoms or an orange top, something black for the other half, and a small green scarf or bow for the stem.
Pair orange with black, tie the green scarf in your hair or around a top knot, and you are a pumpkin. A chic one. It is the only night of the year someone can call you a gourd and mean it as a compliment.
Missing piece: Willow Boutique's orange bell bottoms. They also look great with a cream sweater through Thanksgiving, which is more than a pumpkin suit can say.
Devil in Red Flares
What you need: red flare jeans, a black top, red lipstick, and horns.
No horns? Twist two pipe cleaners or rolled foil into points and attach them to a headband with tape. Add a bold red lip and a sharp wing of eyeliner. Arrive fashionably late and tell everyone it is part of the character.
Missing piece: red flare jeans from the Viral Fiona Flares collection.
If You Own a Little Black Dress
The black dress has been a witch, a vampire and a cat at roughly every Halloween party in history. It keeps getting cast because it never misses.
Witch
What you need: a black dress, black tights, ankle boots, and a broom from your kitchen.
A pointed hat helps, but dark lipstick and smoky eyes carry the look without one. The broom is the real star here. It works as a prop, a dance partner, and cleanup crew at the end of the night.
Vampire
What you need: a black dress, red lipstick, a powder one shade lighter than your usual, and slicked back hair.
Dab a tiny drop of red lipstick at the corner of your mouth for a "just had dinner" effect. A turtleneck under a slip dress makes this version warmer and more dramatic. For authenticity, refuse the garlic bread all night.
Black Cat
What you need: an all black outfit, eyeliner, and a headband.
Tape two black paper triangles to the headband for ears, draw a winged eye and three whiskers on each cheek, and you are done in ten minutes. Ignore anyone who calls your name. Very accurate to the source material.
Missing piece: anything from the Dresses collection, or a top from the Mock Neck Collection worn with black flares for a sleeker cat.
If You Own a Flannel

Fall weather and flannel season are the same thing, which makes these the warmest costumes on the list. If your Halloween involves a bonfire or a porch handing out candy, start here.
Lumberjill
What you need: a red or buffalo check flannel, jeans, boots, and a beanie.
Roll the sleeves, carry a coffee mug, and announce that you are heading out to chop wood. Do not chop any wood. Staying in character is the whole costume.
90s Grunge Kid
What you need: a flannel, a graphic tee, ripped jeans, boots, and dark lipstick.
Tie the flannel around your waist, leave your hair a little messy, and practice looking deeply unimpressed by everything. Most of us mastered that expression years ago.
Missing piece: the Viral Cindy High Rise Tummy Control Destroy Flare. The rips are already done for you, and the tummy control panel means the jeans stay comfortable through a long night of looking bored on purpose.
Scarecrow
What you need: a flannel, light wash jeans, a hat, twine or rope for a belt, and brown eyeliner.
Draw freckles and a small stitched patch on one cheek, tuck a few pieces of raffia or dried grass into your cuffs and pockets, and tie the twine at your waist. Optional: stand very still near the snack table and see who notices.
Missing piece: a flannel from the Flannels and Sweaters collection.
If You Own a Graphic Tee or a Plain Top
Mime
What you need: a black and white striped top, black flares or leggings, white face makeup, and red lipstick.
Add suspenders or a beret if you have them. The best part of this costume: you are not required to talk to anyone you would rather avoid. Consider it a feature.
Rosie the Riveter
What you need: a denim or chambray shirt, a red bandana, jeans, and red lipstick.
Roll the sleeves past the elbow, knot the bandana on top of your head, and practice the flexed arm pose for photos. Every group picture you are in will look better for it.
80s Workout Instructor
What you need: an oversized graphic tee, leggings, a headband, and a side ponytail.
Knot the tee at the hip or let it slip off one shoulder, add the brightest colors you own, and count to eight out loud at random moments. Extra points for leading the room in a warmup before the music starts.
Missing piece: a roomy tee from the Graphic Tees collection.
If You Own Cowboy Boots and a Trucker Hat

Cowgirl
What you need: boots, denim flares or shorts, the top you would wear to a country concert, a hat, and a bandana.
Tie the bandana at your neck, add a belt with a big buckle if you own one, and keep the denim as the anchor of the whole look. Learn one line dance and teach it to strangers. By midnight, you are the party.
Missing piece: a hat from the Trucker Hats collection, or one of the tops from our Country Concert Collection.
Closet Costumes for You and Your Best Friend

Duo costumes look planned even when they were invented in a parking lot ten minutes before the party. These need nothing beyond what two closets already hold.
- Salt and Pepper: one of you in all white, one in all black, with a paper "S" and "P" taped to your tops.
- Angel and Devil: red flares and horns for one, a white outfit and a foil halo for the other. Decide in advance who is the angel, or settle it with rock, paper, scissors.
- Ketchup and Mustard: one in red, one in yellow. It is a low effort costume that photographs surprisingly well.
- Disco Twins: matching Fiona Flares in two different colors, coordinating tops, and synchronized dance moves you rehearse exactly once.

Missing One Piece? Here's How to Get It in Time
Sometimes the closet comes up one item short. Maybe your only flares went to a friend in 2023 and never came back. Maybe your flannel is currently living in someone else's car. If that is you, order this week and check the delivery options at checkout so your piece arrives before the party does.
If you want the shortcut, the Spooky Flare Bundle in our Halloween collection on willowboutique.com was made for exactly this week. Everything else in this guide is a piece you will keep wearing, which is the whole point. A polyester banana suit has one night of use in it. A pair of flares has years.
A quick word on fit. Every product page has a size chart, and customer reviews often mention how the rise and length fit on different heights, which helps if you are between sizes. For the disco look, flares should cover most of your shoe, so factor in your platforms when you check the length. If you want jeans that hold you in comfortably for a long night of dancing, look for the tummy control styles.
Willow Boutique was named to the Inc. 5000 list of fast growing private companies, and founders Adam and Chelsea were recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. More useful to you right now: shoppers keep the Fiona Flares at 4.7 to 4.8 stars in their reviews, and members of the VIP Rewards Program earn rewards on every order, Halloween emergencies included.
Your Closet Is Already Halfway There
The best last minute Halloween costumes come from clothes you already love wearing. Pull out your flares, your black dress or your favorite flannel, add one or two details from your makeup bag, and you have a costume that took less time than finding a parking spot at the costume store.
If your closet is missing the piece that pulls it together, shop the Viral Fiona Flares collection and the Spooky Flare Bundle in the Halloween collection at willowboutique.com this week. Join the VIP Rewards Program while you are there, so your Halloween emergency also earns you rewards. You will still be wearing the flares at Thanksgiving. The broom can go back to the kitchen.
